Match played at Northop GC on Sunday 25th June

Caernarfonshire 4 v Denbighshire 4

A Denbighshire team comprising of seven debutants (two at U14 & one at U16) defied all odds to share the spoils against an experienced Caernarfonshire team in their first match of the season at Northop GC on Sunday 25th June. Daniel Lloyd, Lewis Jones, Ashley Jones and young Callum of Abergele brought the points home for Denbighshire.  A performance of note was that of Matthew Sandoz (Wrexham), U14 Welsh squad member who held Welsh Mens International Lee Jones (Conwy) for 13 holes before running out of steam & then experience showed its true value. A memorable day & all round experience for the future stars of tomorrow.

Match Report

Staffordshire v NWCGA on 23rd May 2017

The inaugural men’s fixture against Staffordshire was played in glorious conditions on the very picturesque Newcastle under Lyme course, just outside Stoke on Trent. The opening nine holes yielded many birdie chances and both teams were quick to capitalise on these early opportunities. The back nine proved to be a much sterner test with the narrow fairways and very quick and slopey greens proving a real challenge to all the players. The morning foursomes did not provide much joy for the NW team, with only a solitary half point gained by the Williams brothers from the five matches.

Although we had a mountain to climb in the afternoon, the NW side put up a spirted effort to try to close the points gap. Unfortunately early losses in the opening three matches put the match out of reach early but the afternoon wins for Kewley, David Williams, O’Brian and Dunlop at least made the overall result look a little more respectable for the visitors.

The overall match result was Staffordshire 10½ points, NWCGA 4½ points.  Although the overall result was disappointing, the players enjoyed the day and were looking forward to the return fixture on home turf next year. May I take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported the team this year.  Here’s hoping for better fortunes next year.

Match Report

Shropshire & Herefordshire v NWCGA on 16th April 2017

The morning foursomes started slowly for the NW team, due primarily to their unfamiliarity with the tight and twisty Llanymynech layout.  The first two matches resulted in comfortable victories for the home side, the NW players behind showed their fighting qualities & in the third match Thomas holed a 35 foot tram liner on the final green to secure a much needed half point for the visitors.  This was followed by another point from the Dunlop/Roberts pairing who came back from 3 down after 4 holes to win their match on the home hole.  A spirited effort in the final foursomes match came to nought as the S&H pairing birdied the last hole to snatch away the possibility of a further half point.  Despite the unfamiliarity with the course the match was well poised at 3½ - 1½ in favour of the home team at lunch.

The rain that had been forecast in the morning finally materialised in the afternoon and provided another interesting dimension for the players to contend with. The matches were very evenly spread with the overall result seesawing throughout the afternoon.  Early wins for the home team were countered by wins from Jordan and Tom Roberts, Joe Soar and Steve Dunlop from the NW side, with a further half point added by Dewi Caughter from Henllys Hall.  In the end the match slipped through our fingers, with the home side running out victors by the margin of 9 - 6.  Although the result did not fall in our favour, the match was played in a great spirit and we look forward to our next meeting in 2019 to hopefully avenge the defeat.

Match Report

NWCGA v Cheshire at Rhuddlan Golf Club on 26th March 2017

The match was played in lovely conditions on a cool but bright day. The course was in very good condition, given the time of year and the recent heavy rainfall. The recently holler tined greens made putting difficult and presented a challenge for both teams.

Despite the stiff breeze the standard of golf displayed by both teams was of a very high standard. The morning foursomes were a very close affair, with many matches being decided on the 17th and 18th greens. The score of 3½ - 2½ in favour of the visitors at lunch reflected the closeness of the match and made for a very exciting afternoon’s golf.

Unfortunately, although many of the afternoon’s matches were closely contested, the results did not go in favour of the North Wales team, with only 2½ points being secured from a possible 12. The overall result points to an overwhelming Cheshire victory, but in reality that didn’t present a true reflection of the individual matches.

The overall result was NWCGA 5 points – Cheshire 13, and was very reminiscent of the result we suffered at Heswall 12 months ago.

Defeat at Heswall

In the opening match of the season the NWCGA team were beaten 13½ to 4½ by a  strong Cheshire team at Heswall GC . The NWCGA team, without a number of regular players, put up a spirited performance in the morning foursome matches with four games going to the 17th or home green but the home side underlined its dominance recording a  6 - 0 success.

The twelve afternoon singles saw the North Wales team battle back & wins were recorded by Adam Partington (Old Padeswood), Howie Hughes (Anglesey) & Matthew Rankenhohn (Henllys) with the trio of Sion Thomas (Bull Bay), Steven Evans (Conwy) & Adam Jones (St. Deiniol) registering halves.

The team, under the Captaincy of Abergele GC's Iain Hayes, now turns its attention to a match at Porthmadog GC against Shropshire & Hereford on Sunday April 17th.

Match Report

Having had the match versus Cheshire curtailed due to the inclement weather, the 10 man team selected to play against Shropshire & Herefordshire were eager to give a good account at Henlle Park, a venue where a North Wales 4 Counties team had won before.  The course was in excellent condition and the greens proved to be quick & true, our men got off to a great start taking a 3½ to 1½ lead in the morning foursomes, with 3 good wins from Gareth Evans & Adam Partington, Gareth Williams & Steve Evans, Paul Roberts & Ashley Griffiths to set us on our way.

The 10 afternoon singles proved to be a one- sided, affair with big wins from Adam Delves, Adam Wilson, Jason Snead & Gareth Williams who was playing his last match for us before he joins the PGA ranks in October, we all wish him a successful future.

We passed the winning point of 8 points with wins from David Ramsey, Steve Evans, Gareth Evans, Adam Partington, Ashley Griffiths with Paul Roberts gaining a half point with a sore hip!

The effort and intent was clear from the off and this was by far the biggest winning margin that has been secured in my tenure as Captain.

The presence of the President Eric, Secretary Gareth and Treasurer Martyn was most appreciated by the team and myself and as a Captain of a very talented group of players it was a pleasure to be involved in what was a very special day.

I would like thank Henlle Park for their hospitality and S&H for the courteous reception and spirit in which the match was played, our men are looking forward to the return fixture next year.

Karl Lurz

NWCGA Captain

NWCGA v Cheshire

The representative match between North Wales and Cheshire 29th March fell victim to the weather. The six morning foursome matches were all started but a heavy rain storm, added to the effect of the overnight rainfall, meant that the greens at Rhuddlan Golf Club became unplayable.  Officials of both counties agreed to abandon the day's programme with the opening match on the seventh hole.

For the second match of the season the North Wales team travels to Henlle Park GC on Sunday, April 19th to face Shropshire and Herefordshire.
